DO NOT USE WOOD:
Don't build this with Oak Planks, Spruce Planks, etc. Using wood might cause the lava to burn it down!

Cat Spawning:
You can tame 5 cats and sit/park them nearby to ensure no new cats spawn. This is assuming you don’t want string in your farm!

Golems Not Spawning:
Make sure you sleep in the bed to reset the villagers. Villagers need to be working for a full day! Depending on the workstation you picked, iron golems may or may not spawn due to villagers working only at specific timings. You can look up workstation info on the Minecraft Wiki for more information.

Villager Distancing:
You should be at least 150+ blocks away from any village. This includes and is not limited to: Raid Farms, Iron Farms, Villager Breeders. I do not recommend you go 150 blocks above a Village as it might interfere with the way Village Radiuses work. You can always break all the beds in a village nearby to "delete" the village. This is a last case solution for those who already made this mistake and can't move their build.

Can I put all of my Villagers inside one box?
In Minecraft, villagers need to be spaced evenly from each other in both Java and Bedrock editions. Placing them all inside a single box will dramatically reduce your farm's efficiency and mess up the rates. YouTubers advertising "square iron farms," also known as "hole iron farms," aren’t being completely honest about the farm's rates. Those designs have been flawed since 2018, and there’s no reason anyone should be building them in 2024. Furthermore, you won’t benefit from a Trade Hall or Raid Iron Farm if you stuff your villagers inside a box.

Path Blocks (Simulation Distances)
Simulation distances will change the behavior of Minecraft farms. You’ll need to expand around your farm with path blocks if you’re using a higher simulation distance. For a simulation distance of 4 (default), you’ll need to path block 8 blocks around your farm. For a simulation distance of 6, you’ll need to path block 12 blocks around your farm. For a simulation distance of 8, you’ll need to path block 16 blocks around your farm. For a simulation distance of 10, you’ll need to path block 20 blocks around your farm. For a simulation distance of 12, you’ll need to path block 24 blocks around your farm.

BONUS: Remember that the farm and the grass path already sit one block from the outer edge. Therefore, going out by seven blocks would total eight, since the first path block is already one block away from the farm. So, do not go out by eight; go out by seven for a total of eight. Apply the same logic to the other simulation distances if they apply to you.

Spawning requirements

Villages attempt to spawn iron golems around the village center when the following requirements are met:

  1. The village contains at least 20 beds.
  2. The village contains at least 10 villagers.
  3. At least 75% of the villagers have worked at their workstations the previous day.
  4. All of the villagers must be linked to a bed.
  5. The village must be within a player's simulation distance volume.
  6. There must be space to spawn an iron golem within a 16×6×16 volume around the village center.
  7. There is less than one naturally generated or spawned (i.e. not player-created) iron golem for every 10 villagers in the village. The ratio of iron golems to villagers is rounded down to the nearest whole number, so to spawn a second iron golem while the first is still alive requires 20 villagers, to spawn a third golem requires 30 villagers, and so on.

Simulation Distance

To clarify, iron golems can spawn as long as the player is within simulation range of the village's boundaries; being near the village center is not necessary. Simulation distance remains consistent both horizontally and vertically. The formula for calculating simulation range is as follows:

Frequency of Spawns

There is a 1/700 chance of an iron golem spawn attempt during each game tick when these conditions are met. This averages to one spawn attempt every 35 seconds. However, the spawn attempt only succeeds in spawning a golem if the game finds a spawnable spot.

Spawnable Space

To search for a spawnable spot during a spawn attempt, the game checks 10 random X, Y, Z coordinates in the 16×6×16 volume around the village center. The spawn attempt succeeds if a chosen coordinate meets the following conditions:

  • There is a solid block underneath.
  • The 2×4×2 volume extending -1 X (west), +3 Y (upward), and -1 Z (north) from the chosen coordinate does not contain any solid or full blocks.

If these conditions are met but there is a partial or transparent block at the chosen coordinate, then the iron golem may appear to spawn on top of the partial or transparent block. This gives the appearance that iron golems can spawn on top of normally non-spawnable blocks like bottom slabs, carpets, and glass.
